Portland State University REU site:
  • Was established in 2001 under the direction of Professor Jun Jiao and joined by Professor Erik Sánchez, Co-PI, in 2006
  • Strongly encourages participation by female and minority students
  • Conducts the REU program over an intensive summer quarter, and provides opportunities for students to participate in continued research through the academic year
  • Has a particular emphasis on microscopy and microanalysis in multidisciplinary research. Students, predominantly from the colleges and universities of the greater Portland area, take part in an intensive summer training program to learn the use of a major research instrument, such as the following:
    • Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM)
    • Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)
    • Focused Ion Beam Microscope (FIB)
    • Photoelectron Microscope (PEM)
  • Includes research projects from such diverse fields as Chemistry, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Geology, Mechanical Engineering, Biology, Environmental Science, and Physics
  • Includes opportunities for participants to present papers at national or local conferences.
Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program:
  • Is sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF)
  • Stipends are provided for students, thus allowing them to focus on their research
  • Is designed to give undergraduate students first-hand experience in how basic research is performed in all fields of science and engineering
  • Intended to be interdisciplinary in nature, and includes events to facilitate interaction between undergraduates and faculty advisors of all fields
  • Is conducted at many sites across the US, each one consisting of approximately ten undergraduates who work in the research programs of the host institution
  • Particularly encourages applications from those in groups traditionally underrepresented in science, including women, minorities, and disabled students
